Compost Cake [Video]

For the past two months 4th and 5th graders in student council have been collecting fruits and vegetables during lunch then bringing up to the garden to compost. At the start of the new year the 1st and 2nd graders have been learning about the composting process and helping to turn the pile. They even designed their own compost cake, which consists of layers of greens, browns, water, and air. Green are fresh scraps that are high in nitrogen while the browns are dried items high in carbon. When mixed correctly with the right amount of layers, water, and air, the pile heats up and speeds up the decomposing process. (Produced by Patty Fung)
