Seed Soak & Dissection

Today our 3rd graders did some dissection. Not on frogs nor on pigs like they do in high school, but on one of the key components to any garden – seeds. We investigated the different parts of the lima bean seed, which was soaked overnight, to see their three main parts (the embryo, cotyledons, and seeds coat) as well as to see how much water 5 dried seeds soaked up in the course of one day. This lesson was part of the Foss Kit program that we have been adapting to our outdoor classroom.
