Summer is approaching and as we prepare the school garden for our summer fallow period, it’s also a great time to clean and maintain your rain catchment systems. In the Fall, I attended the Cistern Maintenance Workshop presented by Kat Sawyer from SFUSD’s Tap the Sky Program. These are 3 main tips that she covered:
- Clean out gutters to remove debris.
- Use up all the rain water in the barrels in your gardens. Then rinse it with a simple vinegar solution and drain.
- Make sure screens are still in place to prevent mosquitos from entering.
