Have you met our new residences at the school garden? If you haven’t, it’s because they are just too busy working in our garden. Who are they? They are AFY Garden’s newest members, our own honey bees. Our school teamed up with Planet Bee Foundation to help our endangered honey bee population. Our organic garden makes the ideal home for these hardworking girls who start working the minute they come out of their honeycombs. The honey bees have been at AFY for more than a month and pollinating our crops. Two weeks ago, our after school students were lucky enough to suit up in full beekeeping gears and had first hand experience to observe the hive with beekeeper, Bill Tomaszewski and our GLO director, Stefanie Taunton. They also tasted some honey, what a treat!
*A big thank to to Planet Bee co-founders Bill and Debra Tomaszewski for the bee hive and making time to come to AFY to teach our students about the importance of honey bees. Bill and Debra will be volunteering at AFY throughout the school year, teaching students, staff, and the community about the importance of honey bees. There maybe some honey spinning come Spring! If you are interested in bee workshops at AFY please contact Ms. Fung at firstname.lastname@example.org.
