Leaf Experiment

Checking in on Session 2 of Experiment (Photo by Ms Fung)

5th graders wrap up their study of vascular plants by using what they’ve learned about leaves, xylem and phloem tubes, and photosynthesis to complete a two week experiment to figure out, “Does covering a leaf with materials affect it?” In session one, students worked in pairs and had the opportunity to select the cover material (foil, plastic bag, or dark/light paper) and to design a set-up that would withstand the wind and rain in the garden. They then recorded their observations on day 1 to make comparisons two weeks later. In session two, students checked in on their leaves and recorded the changes. During our group discussion the changes they observed, including condensation, dryness, leaf curl, bugs, mold, and changes in color, and factors that might have caused them. Here are some samples of work from our short project.
