Aqueduct Building Challenge


What do you do in the garden when the temperature is above 80 degrees Fahrenheit? You put your original lesson plan aside and invite 1st graders to complete the Aqueduct Building Challenge! At AFY we can utilize our hilly garden to transport water using gravity, and we are lucky enough to have the aqueduct building materials that have been around in our garden since our very first garden teacher, Arden, came up with the wonderful project. At the beginning of class we talked about how people have been using gravity for hundreds of years to transport water from reservoirs to cities or farms. Then after demonstrating the movement of a rock through a pipe situated at different angles (flat, high to low, low to high), 1st graders used their knowledge and became little engineers today as they worked as a large team to get the water to flow from the spout at the top of the garden to the apple tree at the bottom. Using only the 5 rain gutters, PVC stands, and cement paint can bases, all 3 classes successfully completed the building and teamwork challenge at the end of the day after several test runs! To enjoy our completed aqueduct, they tested how different materials navigate along the system by placing them on the gutters. At the end of the day, they all got a little mist to cool off from all their hard work.
