“Plants have feelings too!”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps!  To celebrate, AmeriCorps members participated in a national day of service.  AFY was lucky enough to host a group of volunteers from Reading Partners and the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps.

Our wonderful volunteers, joined by AFY parents Jennifer Louie and Charlotte Moore, worked hard to amend our raised beds with FOUR cubic yards of compost!

In a little less than two hours they finished prepping all of our beds for our students to begin planting!

Third grade students planted spinach…

First grade students planted bok choy and practiced using rulers to measure the height of the plants…

And kindergarten students planted pea seeds!  After listening to the seed song everyone was excited to put their ears to the dirt to “hear the sound of seeds starting to grow!”

All of our students were eager to predict how tall the vegetables would grow before the next class.

The before and after pictures are a great indication of everyone’s hard work!

Thank you to our AmeriCorps volunteers for providing our students with a wonderful fall planting experience!
